WinAudit :: Sending by E-Mail
|
To send the audit report by e-mail, on the menu, select File + Send E-Mail at which point WinAudit will attempt to start your e-mail programme and create a new message containing the audit report. Enter the recipient(s) address then click the send button. WinAudit will not send an e-mail without the user's knowledge.
The report contains tables, so for best legibility use a fixed-width font to view it. Some e-mail programmes 'helpfully' remove a message's formatting. This is often a slow process and it can take a while to complete.
Unicode Note: The underlying e-mail functionality is provided by an operating system component that does not support Unicode, hence some characters may not display correctly. A simple work around, is to Edit + Select All + Copy then to paste the audit into a new e-mail message. An alternative is to save the audit as Unicode text and then to send it as an attachment.
Administrator Note - MAPI
Using this facility requires that you have the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) on the computer. The messaging software comes as part of Microsoft® Windows® however, in rare instances it may not have been installed when the operating system was initially setup. To determine if MAPI is installed you can check for one of the following:
- An inbox on the computer's desktop.
- Programmes have the menu item 'File + Send To + Mail Recipient' present.
- The file mapi32.dll is present in the Windows system directory.
An easy way to determine if you have MAPI installed is to let WinAudit check for you. Perform an audit then click the e-mail button. If you see the message 'Could not find the software file mapi32.dll...' then you need to install it. The exact installation procedure is operating system dependent and requires the Windows Setup programme to be used. Normally, this task is reserved for administrators and you may be asked for original installation media (e.g. CD-ROM). If you need to install MAPI go to the control panel then Add/Remove programmes then to Windows Setup. MAPI forms part of a messaging program, i.e. installing the messaging programme installs MAPI. The exact name and location of the appropriate messaging programme is operating system dependent. Therefore, you may have to highlight the various programmes until you see one that has a description containing the abbreviation MAPI. Often it is to be found in Windows® Messaging or Microsoft® Exchange. Check the appropriate box and continue with the setup procedure. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.
Administrator Note - E-Mail Client
For WinAudit to automatically invoke an e-mail programme it must be set as the default e-mail application. The exact procedure depends on the programme in question and its version. Making configuration changes to an e-mail programme may affect other e-mail programmes that you have on your computer. If you are in doubt, contact your systems administrator. Some sample procedures are given below:
Windows Mail
On the menu bar, select Tools then the General tab. In the section entitled 'Default Messaging Programs' and select 'Make Default' for Mail Handler.
Outlook Express
On the menu, select Tools then Options, click on the General tab and select 'Make Outlook Express my default e-mail program' or perhaps 'This application is the default mail handler'. Version 4.xx of Outlook express requires you to check the box 'Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI client'.
Microsoft Outlook®
Existing users of Microsoft® Outlook® should require no additional configuration.
Mozilla Thunderbird™
On the menu, select Tools then Options, click on the General image and select 'Use Thunderbird as the default application'.
Netscape® Mail
On the menu, select Edit then Preferences then Mail and Newsgroups. Check the box 'Use Netscape Mail as the default mail application'.
Netscape® Messenger
On the menu, select Edit then Preferences then Mail. Select 'Use Netscape Messenger with MAPI applications'.
